Cowan Elementary Buddy Program!

Cowan Elementary Buddy Program — Building Connections Across Grades

Cowan students all participate in our buddy program that pairs them with a buddy from a different grade so they can learn, play, and grow together. It’s simple, low‑key, and full of big benefits — for academics, social skills, and the whole school vibe.

Here’s what it looks like in action

  • Chess Buddies: Fourth grade students teach chess basics and play short matches with Kinder buddies. It’s a great way to build focus, sportsmanship, and strategic thinking.
  • Reading Buddies: Third graders read with TK — sometimes the older kid reads a story, sometimes they take turns. Younger students get models for fluent reading, and older students practice mentoring.
  • Other pairings: buddies art projects, playground games, and short show‑and‑tell sessions. Younger kids gain confidence; older kids get leadership practice.

Why buddies make a difference

  • Kids feel safer and more connected around school — little ones have friendly faces at recess, and older students take pride in helping others.
  • Academic growth happens naturally: older kids reinforce skills by explaining them, and younger kids get extra practice in a low‑pressure setting.
  • We see stronger school culture: respect, responsibility, and kindness spread when older students model those behaviors.

How we keep it working

  • Short, monthly meetups on Buddies Day the first Friday of the month (about 20–30 minutes) that tie into reading, games, or simple projects.
  • Clear roles and activity cards so buddies know what to do.
  • Adult supervision and occasional training for older students, so interactions are positive and productive.

If you’re visiting Cowan or want to get involved, stop by the office — we’d love to show you how these buddy programs contribute to our strong school community.
