Library

Welcome!

Cowan Bobcats are super readers and we LOVE our library!

Cowan Library Policies

CHECKOUTS

Transitional Kindergarten through third grade students are invited to check out ONE (1) book per week.

Fourth through sixth grade students are allowed TWO (2) books per week. One of these books should be non-fiction or a class project book, and the other is student choice.

DAMAGED BOOKS

If a library book is returned and is damaged to the point that it is no longer able to be enjoyed by other students it will be sent home with the last student that had possession with a note explaining the situation and asking for a replacement.

HOURS

Students at Cowan are invited to visit the library once a week with their classes at their scheduled time. The library is CLOSED before and after school and during recesses/lunch.

LOST BOOKS

Lost library books can be replaced with the exact same book or paid for via cash or check made out to COWAN SCHOOL (library fine on subject line). The fine amount must be equal to the price and quality of the original book (i.e. a hardcover or library-bound book cannot be replaced with a paperback).

RENEWALS

Library books can be renewed TWICE (2) with the exception of GRAPHIC NOVELS. These are quick, easy reads and cannot be renewed.

District Policies

All students are responsible for returning their borrowed library books and resources or paying for the materials if lost.  A returned book is more desirable.  If a student pays for the lost book and later finds and return the book within a school year, the money will refunded.

The school will hold a student’s report card if he/she does not return a book or pay for a lost or damaged book.  See San Juan Unified School District Policy 5131.51:  “Any student, or the parent/guardian of any minor student, shall be held liable for all property belonging to the district that has been damaged destroyed, stolen or lent and not returned upon demand.  After affording the student his/her due process rights, the district may withhold the grades, diploma and transcripts of the student responsible for the vandalism or theft until the student or the student’s parent/guardian has paid for the damages.  Prior to withholding a student’s grades, diploma, transcript, the district shall notify the student’s parent/guardian in writing of the student’s alleged misconduct. (Education Code 48904)”
